Regional Deal

Tracking progress and alignment between the Regional Deal and the 10 SmarterGrowth Principles.

A polished, dark-wood conference table covered with neatly arranged planning materials: a bound document titled “Western Bay of Plenty Regional Deal” in understated navy and white, several colour-coded policy briefs, and a crisp set of architectural and transport diagrams. A single silver pen lies parallel to the edge of the main report, and a slim digital tablet displays a simple dashboard of key regional indicators. The room features floor-to-ceiling glass with an out-of-focus view of a coastal landscape and low-rise urban area. Natural afternoon light fills the space, creating clear reflections on the tablet screen and subtle highlights on the report covers. Photographic realism, eye-level composition, clean and modern mood, expressing professionalism, clarity, and evidence-based regional decision making.

Understanding the Regional Deal

The Western Bay of Plenty Regional Deal sets a shared framework for housing, transport, environment, and infrastructure, with staged milestones through 2035 to ensure every investment reflects the 10 Smarter Growth principles.

More details on the Regional Deal structure need to be submitted by November. This is the window for public input on how it will be organised at a high level.

How the Current Strategy Aligns

SmartGrowth is a strategic development framework for the Western BOP that has evolved over the past decade and provides some guidance to the new Regional Deal. We assessed the latest iteration (2024 Decision Document) with the SmarterGrowth Principles – and found stronger alignment is still needed.
